Birch bark is a remarkable natural material. For centuries it has been used to create every day and ceremonial objects, including containers, canoes, clothing, footwear, insulation, and household items. Thanks to its natural components, betulin and betulinic acid, birch bark is exceptionally strong, flexible, and long-lasting.
Archaeological finds across Scandinavia, Germany, and Russia highlight just how deeply rooted this material is in human history. In many cultures, the birch tree holds great symbolic and practical importance. The birch bark used in this workshop comes from Sweden and Russia and is of outstanding quality once you work with it, you’ll understand why it’s so highly valued.
During the workshop, you’ll first learn how to properly prepare birch bark for different weaving and braiding techniques. You’ll then create several projects over the course of the day. We’ll begin with smaller items to help you become familiar with the material, such as decorative elements, a knife sheath, or a bookmark. After building confidence and skill, you’ll move on to weaving a small basket.
