Nalbinding: Around the World and Across Time

Join ‘Sally Pointer’ award-winning experimental archaeologist and heritage educator – for a fascinating hands-on journey through the history of loop-manipulated textiles.

Sally specialises in tracing craft techniques from their earliest origins to the present day and is the author of Nalbinding: It’s Not Knitting! (Herbert Press, 2026).

In this immersive workshop, you’ll explore the ancient roots of nalbinding, a technique that predates knitting by thousands of years.

Working step-by-step, you’ll learn five distinctive stitches:

  • Simple looping, looping around a core (Tybrind Vig stitch),
  • Coptic stitch (cross-knit looping),
  • York (Coppergate) stitch,
  • Oslo stitch.

Giving you a comprehensive grounding in this remarkably versatile craft.

No prior experience is required — just enthusiasm and curiosity for ancient textiles and traditional making!

Also included in this fantastic workshop will be a free signed copy of Sally’s book Nalbinding: It’s Not Knitting! (Herbert Press, 2026) .
